Electric vehicles are paving the way for a cleaner transportation future in our Commonwealth, reducing pollution and pain at the pump for their drivers.

As EVs become more and more popular, Virginia will need to be proactive by ensuring adequate charging infrastructure parallels their adoption. Charging at home is the easiest and most affordable option for drivers. But today, many people living in multifamily homes must rely on higher-cost and less convenient public charging.

This bill addresses this issue by enabling localities to set minimum standards for EV readiness in new multifamily, commercial, and industrial buildings, along with reducing utility costs to energize EV chargers. These changes will help to circumnavigate costly future upgrades as more Virginians go electric.

The bill passed out of the House of Delegates 61-35 and cleared the Senate 22-18 with Republican Travis Hackworth joining Democrats. The legislation was signed by Governor Spanberger.
