As we transition further away from coal as a source for energy in Virginia, its toxic legacy is unfortunately still with us. Across the commonwealth, ash generated from burning coal for electricity sits in ponds at power plant sites, where it poses serious risks to public health and the environment. It’s time for us to pass commonsense safeguards BEFORE the next toxic spill can happen.
We were close this year. Let’s make it a reality in 2017.
Please, sign our petition calling for our utilities to safely dispose of coal ash in lined, federally permitted landfills and to remediate coal ash sites fully, so that they don’t pose a long-term risk to water quality and public health.
