History of the Conference

In 2018, a passionate group of concerned citizens came together to form Fossil Free Fredericksburg, with a mission to raise awareness about the pressing reality of climate change and advocate for a City Council Resolution to ensure Fredericksburg’s electricity would come from 100% renewable energy by 2050. These citizens recognized the importance of involving the next generation in this critical fight, so they invited local high school and college students to join their cause. These young leaders immediately took charge, crafting a vision for a youth-led climate summit at the University of Mary Washington.

On April 6, 2019, the first summit took place, fueled by the creativity and innovation of these students. They brought together diverse voices from scientists, engineers, activists, and business leaders to discuss actionable climate solutions. The event was a dynamic blend of education and engagement, featuring music, games, and interactive activities that made learning about climate action both enjoyable and impactful. The summit’s success played a pivotal role in the Fredericksburg City Council’s passing of a landmark clean energy resolution that December.

Inspired by the summit’s success, students from Colonial Forge High School in Stafford took the lead in organizing the second conference. They not only planned and executed the event but also collaborated with the county school board to install solar panels in Stafford schools, making a tangible impact on the community’s sustainability efforts.

Since then, two more successful summits have been held at UMW, each one larger and more impactful than the last, with dozens of students from across the region participating. These events have sparked new ideas, fostered collaboration, and motivated countless individuals to take action against climate change.

As we now prepare for our 5th Climate Action Summit on February 21-22, 2025, we are proud to continue our support of these passionate students and community leaders. The Virginia League of Conservation Voters is honored to have co-hosted and helped facilitate the last two summits, and we look forward to our third year of involvement in making this summit a powerful platform for climate action. Together, we can empower even more young people to take bold action in the fight for a sustainable future.
