{"id":588,"date":"2020-03-05T19:36:47","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T19:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valcv26.wpenginepowered.com\/newsroom\/virginia-lcv-celebrates-passage-of-legislation-to-advance-environmental-justice-health-safeguards\/"},"modified":"2020-03-05T19:36:47","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T19:36:47","slug":"virginia-lcv-celebrates-passage-of-legislation-to-advance-environmental-justice-health-safeguards","status":"publish","type":"valcv_release","link":"https:\/\/valcv.org\/es\/newsroom\/virginia-lcv-celebrates-passage-of-legislation-to-advance-environmental-justice-health-safeguards\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia LCV celebrates passage of legislation to advance environmental justice, health safeguards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RICHMOND \u2013 As the 2020 General Assembly nears its end, the legislature has passed a number of impactful bills to safeguard vulnerable communities and Virginians\u2019 health from environmental threats.<\/p>\n<p>From the water that comes out of our taps at home to the air that our children breathe when they\u2019re at school, lawmakers have taken important strides forward in 2020 to ensure that all Virginians are better protected from toxic threats to our health and our environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work towards creating a permanent environment justice council has helped ensure a forum for communities of color and low-income residents have a place to discuss their concerns in an impactful way,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Danielle Simms, interim political director for the Virginia League of Conservation Voters<\/strong>. \u201cWhile we need to continue to ensure that a diversity of voices have a seat at the table in decision-making processes, this has helped highlight injustices such as mold, lead contamination in water, legionella in schools, lead contamination in water at\u00a0daycares, medical monitoring for\u00a0private well owners near coal ash ponds in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and a study of PFAS in water sources. Luckily, this session major progress was made to find solutions to these environmental health and justice concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the important environmental justice and health provisions that have passed are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?201+sum+HB586\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?201%2Bsum%2BHB586&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583523342974000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGQ4uD2yzRflZxJ23OvL738UoD2Jg\">House Bill 586<\/a>\u00a0from Del.
